The Governor of Sokoto State,Aminu Tambuwalhas approved the immediate payment of July salaries to workers of the state ahead of the Eid-el-Fitr. Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, on Monday alighted from his vehicle to assist in the rescue of an accident victim. The victim, Miss Anukam Angela, who was driving alone in a wine Toyota Corolla with number plate EKY 415 CG, at about 8.15am, lost control and rammed into the median of the road along Osborne Road, Ikoyi, before the vehicle somersaulted. Ambode, who was heading to the office through the direction before the incident occurred, ordered his convoy to stop at the scene so as to enable him to assess the situation as well as help rescue the passengers. The governor instructed the ambulance attached to his convoy to convey the victim, who was in a state of shock, and could barely move or talk, to the Lagos Island General Hospital for treatment. Angela’s sister, Amaka, who was contacted shortly after the crash, said she was treated for minor injuries free and discharged on the order of the governor. She said the ambulance also conveyed her sister back to her residence at 3, Efosa Ehiedu Close, off Modupe Thomas Estate, Ajah, while the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority assisted in towing the vehicle away from the roadside to prevent traffic gridlock. The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Habib Aruna, said, “What the governor has done is typical of him. It is indeed a demonstration of his concern to the well-being of every resident and Miss Angela is not an exception. “He has also, with this act, shown his commitment to an all inclusive approach in protecting the lives and property of citizens in the state.”

A 33-year-old man has been arrested and charged before Oshodi Magistrates’ court for alleged indecent assault and having unlawful carnal knowledge of a 20-year-old mentally challenged woman in Oshodi, Lagos State, western Nigeria. The man, Itodo Stephen, allegedly had carnal knoweledge of the victim (name withheld) when she was alone in their home at Alhaji Shehu Close, Oshodi, Lagos where Stephen lives with the victim’s parents. He was charged with indecent assault by touching her private part and rape under the Criminal Code before Magistrate Akeem A. Fashola. Stephen was alleged to have pulled the victim’s pant and inserted his fingers inside her private part and later had unlawful carnal knowledge of her. P.M.NEWS gathered that the victim did not resist him because of her mental state. This happened when the victim’s parents were not around and while Stephen did not go to work on that day. However, he was caught in the act by a neighbour who raised the alarm. The victim’s parents were contacted and when they returned from work they reported the matter to the police at Makinde Division and Stephen was arrested. At the station, he allegedly admitted that he touched her private part and had normal s*x with her. He told the police that the victim did not resist him and that he did not force her as claimed by her parents. P.M.NEWS learnt that, because of her condition, the victim could not make statement to the police to determine whether it was actually a case of rape or not. The police, who were initially in a dilemma over what to do with Stephen, later charged him to court for the alleged offence. While in court, Stephen pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him and the court granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum. The matter was further adjourned for hearing. Stephen was remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri pending when he will perfect his bail condition.

The police on Thursday arraigned a 29-year-old businessman, Manya Obiora, in a Kado Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for assaulting two policemen. Obiora, who is a businessman and repairs cell phones, resides at Zone 7, Lugbe, Abuja. The prosecutor, Inspector Simon Ibrahim, told the court that the matter was reported by two policemen: Corporals Kelechi Odurobi and Henry Ossia, attached to Utako Police Station, Abuja, on June 11. He said that on same date, the policemen went to Kanapy market, Wuse Zone 3, Abuja, to invite one Chidi for allegedly receiving stolen property. Ibrahim said that Obiora left his shop to the place of arrest and hindered the policemen from doing their lawful duty. He added that the officers later asked him to excuse them to avoid the accused from escaping lawful arrest. The prosecutor said that rather than allowing the policemen to carry out their duty, Obiora held Corporal Henry Ossia and assaulted him with his working tools. He said the accused even threatened to ensure their dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force. Ibrahim said this made the initial accused to escape lawful arrest, adding that the offence contravened sections 167, 267, 397 and 327 of the Penal Code. However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge against him and the judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, granted him bail in sum of N50,000 and a surety in like sum. Sadiq ordered that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and adjourned the case until August 3 for further hearing.

Four members of the robbery gang, which unleashed terror on two commercial banks in the Ipakodo, Ikorodu area of Lagos two weeks ago, have been arrested by the police. Our correspondent learnt that the suspected robbers were arrested from Okitipupa, Ondo State, and Ikorodu, Lagos State, while three Sport Utility Vehicles allegedly bought from the proceeds of the robbery were recovered. The suspects’ names were given as Monday Akpan, Bright Agbojule, the third identified simply as Jafaru, and one Baba Ibeji. On Wednesday, June 24, the gang, which was reportedly led by a woman, had stormed the Ebute-Ipakodo branches of the First Bank and Zenith Bank at about 8.30am, and carted away millions of naira. The robbers, who overwhelmed policemen from the Ipakodo division, were said to have carted away about N60m from the Zenith Bank’s strong room, while N20m were stolen from the bank’s ATM room. The suspects, who dared policemen to confront them, later escaped in two speedboats at the Ipakodo jetty, Ikorodu. Four persons, including a bank customer, who were hit by bullets during the one-hour operation, were taken to the General Hospital, Ikorodu. PUNCH Metro gathered that four members of the gang were arrested by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, in an operation involving a former SARS commander, SP Abba Kyari, and an officer, DSP James Okeke. PUNCH Metro gathered that one of the suspected robbers, a week after the operation, had headed for the Okitipupa area, Ondo State, with a Lexus bought with the proceeds of the robbery. A police source told PUNCH Metro that the suspect was arrested by soldiers, who were on a stop-and-search exercise in Ondo State. It was learnt that the suspect was also found with bundles of new N1,000 notes with bank seals. The police source said the arrest was the break that the police needed, adding that the suspect later led policemen to arrest other members of the gang. He said, “The soldiers were on a stop-and-search and they found the suspect, identified only as Baba Ibeji, while on his way to his home town in Okitipupa, Ondo State. “During a search, they found bundles of new N1,000 notes with bank seals in his bag. “The soldiers, who were also aware of the bank robbery in Lagos, smelt a rat and contacted the Lagos State Police Command on the development. “The former CP, Kayode Aderanti, immediately contacted experienced hands in SARS for the interview of the suspect. The suspect gave the contacts and names of other suspects. The operatives subsequently mobilised more officers to Ikorodu and made some arrests. “Three suspects were picked up by the police in Ikorodu. Two of them had bought Sport Utility Vehicles with the proceeds. All of them had bought plots of land with their loots. Three vehicles have been recovered for now.” Our correspondent learnt that the suspects would be paraded on Monday (today) at the state command headquarters, Ikeja. It was learnt that efforts were still being intensified to get other members of the gang, which reportedly numbered about 15. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the arrests in a text message. He said, “The Commissioner of Police, Kayode Aderanti, will parade the suspects on Monday, as he hands over to the new CP, Fatai Owoseni, at the command headquarters.”

A suicide bomber killed six people at a church on Sunday in Potiskum, a town in northeast Nigeria hit by suspected Boko Haram attacks in the past, a Red Cross official and a witness said. “People were just going to the church when the bomber entered, otherwise the casualty figure would have been higher,” said Red Cross official Hassan Alhaji Muhammad, who visited the scene of the blast on the outskirts of Potiskum. A hospital in Potiskum said it had received the bodies. Suspected Islamist militant gunmen and bombers killed more than 200 people last week in a spate of bloodletting that prompted renewed outrage and calls for an international meeting to coordinate the offensive against Boko Haram. French President Francois Hollande said the Boko Haram threat was getting stronger and that he was ready to hold a summit, following one in Paris in May 2014, to gather the leaders of countries fighting the insurgents. New Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is due to visit his counterpart in Cameroon after the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and meets U.S. President Barack Obama on July 20, when the fight against Boko Haram is likely to be high on the agenda. Potiskum is in Yobe state next to Borno, a remote state which is Boko Haram’s stronghold in Nigeria and borders Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

30 People Killed As Gunmen Storm Zamfara Communities

At least 30 people have been reported dead following fresh attacks by gunmen in Birnin-Magaji local government area of Zamfara, the News Agency of Nigeria reports. The Chairman of the council, Muhammad Gusami, said on Sunday that the attacks took place in Kokeya and Chigama villages in the area. Mr. Gusami said the gunmen invaded Kokeya village with motorcycles and killed two persons, set some houses ablaze and carted away animals mostly cows. He said that the “unfortunate incident” had been reported to the Divisional Police Officer of Birnin-Magaji as well as soldiers on surveillance of the zone. According to him, while this is going on, the attackers returned the next day and invaded the neighbouring village of Chigama. “The gunmen, however, killed more than 30 persons whose bodies were still being recovered from the bush,’’ he said. The chairman said the corpses have been taken to Birnin-magaji General Hospital. He said the Chigama attack took place shortly after three police trucks just left the area when they noticed that peace had returned to the area. He added that the armed bandits also set several houses on fire on their second attack on Chigama village. The News Agency of Nigeria did not state when the attacks occurred. Ibrahim Sani, a witness, said that the gunmen who invaded Kokeya came while the villagers were closing from their prayers. “The attackers shot sporadically in the air which prompted the people of Chigama to intervene. “That may have provoked the gunmen to come back so as to punish Chigama people for trying to prevent the attack the previous day. “While three persons were killed from Kokeya and Chigama on the first day in Kokeya, more than 50 were killed on the second day in Chigama while several houses were burnt,” Mr. Sani said. A 38-year-old housewife, Mrs Gbemisola Basorun has been reportedly abducted from her residence in Ikorodu, southwest Nigeria. Gbemisola, mother of two and an HND graduate of Secretarial Administration, was abducted in front of her apartment at 5, Basorun Abimbola Street, Agodo-Alara via Odogunyan/Ikorodu on her way from an evening service on Tuesday. According to eye witness accounts, the victim was returning from church in her private car, a Pathfinder SUV with registration number plate KTU 476 CM in company of her children when four unidentified men riding on a motorcycle blocked her car at the entrance of the building. Gbemisola’s first child, seven-year-old Olamide, was about opening the gate for her mother when the gunmen alighted from the motorcycle and one of them pointed a gun at her and ordered her to the back seat where her five-year-old brother was seated. The boy and his sister were later thrown out of the car by their assailants while two of the men sat with the woman and the other one took over the driver’s seat. The motorcyclist and the car were said to have driven off together, leaving the children to their fate. Abimbola Basorun, Gbemisola’s husband said one of his neighbours put a distress call across to him around 8pm and he quickly alerted the police both at Sagamu road, Ikorodu and Ogijo Police Divisions, Ogun State who later recovered the car the following day but his wife’s whereabouts remain unknown. “I was not around when the incident occurred but the police are aware about the development and they have swung into action,” he said. Former FCT Minister, Nasir El-Rufai Declares N90B And 40 Mansions In Abuja As Assets

Governor Nasir ElRufai of Kaduna State has declared his asset. He is worth N90 billion. The governor’s assets declaration came as a big shock to most Kaduna residents yesterday as he allegedly declared ownership of 40 mansions, most of which are located in Abuja. Kaduna State Director Code of Conduct Bureau, George David, however, declined to comment when contacted. He said the law on asset declaration permitted public office holders not to make their asset declaration public. The director however disclosed that asset declaration by El- Rufai and his Deputy were made long before yesterday. According to him, any further information concerning the amount and assets involved in the declaration form, could only be enquired from Abuja headquarter of the Bureau. Governor El-Rufai’s Adviser on Media and Communication, Muyiwa Adekeye, confirmed that the governor had declared his assets but promised to get back to journalists with details.
